Connect Stripe

Stripe is the other way to take card payments in Packyard, besides Square. With Stripe you can send a payment link by text or email, show a QR code at the front desk, and charge cards on file. In the Packyard app on an iPhone or Android phone, you can also take contactless payments with Tap to Pay. You don’t need a card reader.

  • You need to be an owner of the Packyard account. Staff see Only the owner can change payment providers. instead of a button.
  • Have your business details and a bank account for payouts handy. Stripe asks for them during setup.
  1. Click the gear icon at the top right to open Settings. On a phone, tap Menu at the bottom left instead.
  2. Click Integrations.
  3. On the Stripe card, click Connect Stripe.
  4. If you take payments with Square today, you’ll see Switch to Stripe? Read it, then click Set up Stripe. See Switching from Square below.
  5. Stripe opens. Fill in your business details, your identity details, and a bank account for payouts, and accept Stripe’s terms.
  6. Stripe sends you back to Integrations. You’ll see Stripe is ready to take payments, and the card shows Connected.

If Stripe still needs something, you’ll see Stripe needs a few more details before you can take card payments. The card shows Setting up and lists what’s missing, like a bank account for payouts. Click Continue setup to finish.

  • You keep taking payments with Square until Stripe is ready. While you finish setup, the Stripe card says Finish setting up Stripe. You’ll keep taking payments with Square until it’s ready. As soon as Stripe can take payments, checkout switches to Stripe.
  • Cards saved with Square can’t be charged while Stripe is on. That includes no-show and cancellation fees. They’re hidden from checkout and from the card list. Add the customer’s card again with Stripe. See Save a card on file.
  • Your Square Terminal isn’t used with Stripe. Use a payment link or a QR code instead.
  • Payment links that are still open are cancelled when the switch happens. Send a new one if a customer hasn’t paid yet.
  • Past Square payments can still be refunded in Packyard.
  • To go back to Square, click Connect Square on the Square card. You’ll see Switch to Square? Click Connect Square to confirm. Your Stripe account, payouts, and past payments stay in Stripe.
  • Ready, but no payouts yet? The card says Ready to take payments. Add a bank account in Stripe to receive payouts. You can take payments now, but Stripe holds the money until you add a bank account. Click Stripe Dashboard to add one.
  • “Stripe is reviewing your details. This usually takes a few minutes.” means Stripe has everything it needs. Check back shortly.
  • To see payouts, Stripe fees, or your balance, click Stripe Dashboard on the Stripe card.
  • Packyard fee: if your plan includes one, the Stripe card shows Packyard fee: [x]% of each card payment, before tips. Stripe’s own fees are separate. Tips are never included.
  • Stripe fees on your reports: in Settings → Reports → Sales, a Stripe fee column shows when the dates you pick include Stripe payments. When several pets are paid together, the fee for the whole payment shows on each pet’s row, so don’t add the column up. The CSV export doesn’t include it.
  • Tip choices for payment links and QR codes are 15%, 20%, and 25%, or the tip percentages you’d set for Square when you connected Stripe. Tip Settings in Integrations only shows for Square.
  • To stop taking payments with Stripe, click Turn off on the Stripe card and confirm. Your Stripe account and payment history stay in Stripe. To start again, click Turn Stripe on.
  • If you see “Stripe turned this request down. Contact Packyard support (reference …)”, email support@packyard.app with the reference. Trying again won’t help.
  • If you see “Stripe couldn’t be reached. Try again in a minute.”, wait a minute and click the button again.
